ターンテーブリストであり、サウンドクリエイターである日本のDJ。 13歳の頃ターンテーブルと衝撃的な出会いをし、故郷仙台の複数のクラブでレギュラーイベントをオーガナイズする活動を中心に行う。そして20歳のとき、ロンドンで行われた世界最大のDJバトル、DMC World Final 2002において、ジャッジ16人中15人が1位をつける大会史上最高得点というギネスを残し、圧勝という形でアジアから初の世界チャンピオンに輝く。その後、日本を含め各国のイベントや大型フェスティバルなど積極的にツアーを決行し、40日間のソロEUツアーなどを収めたDVD作品"National Geoscratch" を2005年1月にリリース、同DVDに収録された"Loop Daigakuin"はYoutube動画200万ビューワーを越える。NHKトップランナーや数々のSpace Shower TV IDなどメディアにも登場し、2004年12月にはイギリス屈指の老舗レーベル "Ninja Tune" の音源のみを使用したMix Album "ON THE WHEELS OF SOLID STEEL" が世界リリースされる。また数多くの楽器奏者や歌い手ともセッションを重ねた後、日本、海外アーティストのRemix制作や楽曲参加など、作品を多く世に出して来た。
2006年4月にはNinja Tuneとアーティスト契約を交わし、1stソロアルバム"ENTER"が2007年に世界リリースされ、その独特にして強烈なリズムとジャンルを縦横無尽に駆け巡るサウンドデザインが評価され、 オリコンインディーズチャート１位 、i-Tunesのダンスチャートではアルバム、シングル共に１位を獲得。2008年にはイギリスの老舗DUBレーベル"Pressure Sounds"から"TUFF CUTS"、自身のレーベルEndeavorから"NAMA LIVE MIX"と立て続けにMix作品をリリースしている。Ninja Tuneが2010年、レーベル創立20周年を記念してリリースするコンピレーションBoxにも参加が決まっている。現在も地球上をジャンルレスな音楽観と共に飛び回るターンテーブルマエストロ DJ KENTARO、ENTER以降のNew Albumの発表が待たれる。
Known the world over as both a turntablist and as a sound creator, Japan's DJ KENTARO first entered the consciousness of the global music community by scoring a landslide victory at the world's biggest DJ battle, the DMC 2002, to become the first ever Asian Champion of the World. Since then he has performed shows across the globe, played Fuji Rock and other large scale festivals outside his home country and continued to tour HARD - footage from which was included in his first DVD "National Geoscratch" released in Jan 2005, which mainly featured his 40-day solo Europe tour and also included the video 'Loop Daigakuin' which went on to accumulate over 2,000,000 views on youtube. In December 2004 Kentaro released a Mix album of tunes all from heavily respected and established UK label Ninja Tune - it was for the Solid Steel mix series and it was the globally acclaimed 'On The Wheels Of Solid Steel'. While increasingly playing sessions with singers and instrumentalists, he also started to move his focus onto track producing and started releasing remixes, both of Japanese and international artists.
April 2006 saw Kentaro sign to Ninja Tune as an artist and the resulting album, his debut solo full-length "ENTER", blew minds worldwide with its original rhythms and borderless sound design. After going to number 1 on the indie charts on Oricon in Japan, it also topped the iTunes Dance Chart with both album and single going to number 1. In 2008, Kentaro released his next mix album "TUFF CUTS" on Pete Holdsworth's renown reggae/dub re-issue label Pressure Sounds and has since also released a mix "NAMA LIVE MIX" on his own label, Endeavor. He will also be included in the much awaited compilation box set celebrating 20 years of Ninja Tune due for release in 2010. DJ KENTARO continues to speed across the globe, giving people a taste of his genre-less musicality while fans worldwide wait for his eagerly anticipated new album.
